Arkansas State DECA Competition 2017
Harrison High School students received top honors at the recent State DECA competition. Harrison DECA members earned seven first place awards, three second place awards, ten third place awards, and ten finalist awards. The Harrison chapter was also recognized as a gold level certified school based enterprise. The Arkansas State DECA conference was held at the Double Tree Hotel in Little Rock, March 5 and 6.
The conference was designed to promote leadership skills and develop essential competencies needed in preparing for marketing, management, and entrepreneurial careers. The 600 students in attendance competed in occupational areas by taking a comprehensive written exam and demonstrating their creativity and problem solving skills through role-playing situations. The top six students in each event were called to the stage and of these the top three winners were presented with plaques.
Harrison's first place winners were Seth Weiser for the Automotive Marketing event, Seth Sweatman and Brady Billings for the Entrepreneurship event, Alyssa Rose, Ashton Spinning and Lydea Clark for the Learn and Earn Project DECA’s House of Grounds, and Alyssa Rose for the DECA Scrapbook project.
Harrison’s second place winners were Matthew Knighton for the Principles of Marketing event, Maebel Edwards for the Human Resources Management event, and Austin Tate for the Business Finance event.
Harrison third place winners were Haley Farber for the Apparel and Accessories Marketing event, Nathan Devito for the Food Marketing event, Samantha Mallett, Kacie Ramsey, and Olivia Huff for the Hospitality and Tourism Research event, Rainy Waggoner and Jason Fraser for the Hospitality Marketing event, and Kayla Wilburn, Isabel Anderson, and Talena Rudelis for the Public Relations Project.
Finalist awards went to Melanie Stone for the Restaurant Management event, Logan Greer and Taner Edwards for the Marketing Management event, Tryton Diffey and Dalton Landrum for the Financial Services team event, Sierra Ballard and Courtney Campbell for the Community Service Project, Laine Hilliard and Cameron Cain for the Sports and Entertainment Marketing Research event, and Samantha Sheldon for the Business Services event.
The first, second, and third place winners will be eligible to compete at the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California April 25-30, 2017. The international conference will attract over 16,000 students from across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and Europe. DECA is a co-curricular program of instruction designed to develop future leaders for marketing, management and entrepreneurship.
